The Forville Market is the best place in Cannes to buy fresh fruit

The Forville Market is the best place in Cannes to buy fresh fruit, vegetables, eggs, meat flowers and cheese.  Located on Rue Felix Faure in the charming area of Le Suquet, it is also a fabulous spot to sit at one of the surrounding cafes and people-watch.

Locals and tourists alike flock here for great food at reasonable prices.  The former bring a delightful array of dogs, often with hair coiffed at the Toilettage (that’s a beauty parlour for hounds) or in startling outfits matching their owners!

The sellers are very friendly so don’t feel shy if your grasp of French is poor – a mixture of pointing and mime will get you through the day!  I gravitate to the stalls which are Bio (organic) or home-grown rather than those with oranges from Spain…. but there really is something to suit everyone’s taste.  Yesterday I came home with Toulouse sausages that were scrumptious with local potatoes and rocket.  Often I pop to Forville market to pick up a picnic to enjoy on a public beach on the Croisette which is a short walk away.

‘Marche Forville’ is a food market Tuesday to Sunday from 7am till 1pm so go early to avoid disappointment.  On Mondays it is a ‘Marche Brocante’, selling all sorts of antique furniture, jewellery and clothing.  If vintage Hermes scarves are your thing then potter down there for a look.  Personally, I was rather put off by the number of leopard skin coats but if that’s your cup of tea then there you go!  There are some beautiful things to look at – if you are after a rummage then find a local Vide Grenier (car-boot sale) as everything here is laid out so precisely I’m sometimes a bit too scared to touch anything.
